Made in 1875, the poster portrays the women of the Temperance movement as patriotic Joan of Arc-esque warriors fighting the scourge of alcohol. Notice the association of Christianity and the Temperance Movement, as the figure in the back holds a banner saying “In the name of God”. Along with the banner, the horse’s reins and saddle, along with the woman’s shield, are decorated with stars and stripes, referencing the American flag. The poster shows the Temperance Movement associated itself with Christianity and American patriotism to further its message.
