William Henry Hall
1843 - 1864
William Henry Hall, a person of color, born in Harvard on March 26, 1842, was the son of Henry and Jerusha Smith Hall. He worked as a farmer and day laborer, according to the 1860 U.S. Census. At age 19, on August 18, 1862, he enlisted with the Union Army fighting in the Civil War. William mustered into Company “G,” 36th Massachusetts Infantry, and eventually was promoted to corporal. William’s company saw action in many battles, including at Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, and The Wilderness.
He was killed at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia on May 12, 1864, at 21 years of age and buried in Fredericksburg, Virginia. His parents added his name to their memorial in the Center Cemetery to honor his memory and his service.
