Robert C. Anderson in his “Directions of a Town” wrote: “The first task of the Shakers at Harvard in their growing years was the cultivation and improvement of the tracts of land they had acquired, probably the worst agricultural land in Harvard.”

55 minutes

Using the latest in agricultural techniques and using barns to not only store hay and feed livestock, but also to efficiently support their agricultural and industrial endeavors, the Harvard Shakers built a successful farming operation across four sub-communities (families) that lasted from 1791 to 1918. The remains of two of their monumental barns still stand and can still teach us how the Shakers made their farm work.
